While the concept of "building credit" may sound like a lot of hard work, it's a fairly simple process. These are ways to build your credit responsibly.3

  • Make all payments on-time
  • Either pay your balance in full, or try to pay more than your minimum each month
  • Avoid carrying a balance -- meaning you pay your balance in full and on time each month -- in order to avoid paying interest on purchase.

To compare student cash back credit cards, look at the percentage of cash back each card offers, whether there's an annual fee, and what APR you'll pay on purchases. If you plan to travel outside the U.S., check whether there are foreign transaction fees. The Discover it Student Card has no annual fee, and it offers a low intro APR.
