You know the script well: You save up to make a big purchase, you bring it home, and you love it. But after a while, something just doesn’t work right and you look up the warranty. And wouldn’t you know—the manufacturer’s warranty just expired.

But if you made your purchase with your Discover card, the device may be covered under Discover’s Extended Product Warranty.

How Discover’s Extended Product Warranty Works

When you purchase a covered item with your Discover card, you may be eligible to receive product warranty insurance that extends the terms of the original U.S. manufacturer’s warranty for up to one additional year, on warranties of 36 months or less. In fact, this coverage is free and it even applies when you make a purchase using Discover Cashback Bonus or Miles. Discover Extended Product Warranty covers your eligible purchases for up to $10,000 per item against defects in material or workmanship, and up to $50,000 per account in any 12-month period. When you file a claim, your item will be repaired or even replaced if it cannot be fixed.

Most items that you purchase with your Discover card are eligible to receive this coverage, but there are some exceptions, such as computer software, motorized vehicles and used goods. In addition, items are not covered if they need repair due to normal wear and tear or a power surge, or if they are covered by a product recall. To see a list of exclusions and limitations, log in to your Discover card account and view the full terms and conditions.

How To File A Claim

When you need a covered item repaired or replaced, and it’s outside of the manufacturer’s warranty, contact Discover at 1-800-DISCOVER (1-800-347-2683) to file a claim. To be eligible, you must file a claim with in 45 days of the covered loss.

You will then be asked to complete a claim form and return it along with copies of the original manufacturer warranty and your account statement showing the purchase, and the original purchase receipt. You may also be asked to provide a copy of the repair bill or a statement indicating that the item cannot be repaired. Once the claim has been fully submitted, you can expect reimbursement within 60 days.

How To Save Money With This Policy

There are a number of ways that you can save money by utilizing extended warranty coverage. First, you can decline expensive additional warranties from retailers, knowing that your Discover card has you covered for up to one year beyond the original manufacturer’s warranty. And second, you are protected against the cost of repairs for longer than you would have been with just the manufacturer’s warranty. Should an item need repair, you can submit a claim for reimbursement, up to $10,000 per item.

When you make a covered purchase, be sure to use your Discover card, and save copies of your receipt and the manufacturer’s warranty. When you bring your purchase home, you’ll have confidence knowing that it’s protected beyond the manufacturer’s warranty.
