The contactless Discover® Card helps you make fast, easy, and secure payments with your card at checkout. To make a payment, you simply tap your contactless Discover® Card at checkout. The card can also be inserted into the card reader or swiped, in the event the cashier or the card reader indicates you should do so.
Find the Contactless Indicator on the back of your card. The Contactless Indicator is an image comprised of four custom-designed semicircles, graduated from the smallest to the largest in size.
Then look for the Contactless Symbol on the card reader at checkout. The Contactless Symbol is comprised of three elements:
- The Contactless Indictor at the center of the symbol
- A hand holding a generic contactless card
- An oval key-line that wraps around the indicator and hand
Hold your card on the card reader for 2-3 seconds to process the payment.
If you see the Contactless Indicator on the back of your card, then you already have a contactless card and can begin using it immediately. If you don’t see the Contactless Indicator, you can request a contactless Discover® Card at Deeplink to Designs pagehere. Contactless cards are not available for all card types.

For most purchases, you can simply tap and pay. Depending on the merchant a signature may be required for larger purchases, typically anything more than $100. You may also be asked if you’d like cash back or if you’re part of the merchant’s loyalty program.
If you see the Contactless Indicator on the back of your Discover card, then you're ready to tap and pay. If you don't see it, you can request a contactless card for free. When you receive your new card, just activate it then you're good to go. Plus, your account number, card number and card verification value (CVV) will stay the same, so no need to update any saved card information.
Yes, you can still insert or swipe when you need to. Your contactless Discover® card works just like you're used to in stores, in apps, online and for over-the-phone purchases. Plus it gives you the option to make contactless payments.

No, your account information will not change. A new card will be issued with the same card number and a new card verification value (CVV).
No. Discover offers many ways to pay. You can insert your chip card into the card reader or pay with an eWallet. Your contactless Discover® Card comes complete with all the same payment options you’re used to.
You can tap your contactless card to pay at contactless-enabled merchants nationwide. Simply look for the Contactless Symbol on the card reader or ask the cashier at checkout. If the tap is not successful, insert your chip card into the card reader and complete the transaction.
Yes. Contactless cards still come with a number, expiration date and card verification value (CVV) that can be used for online or over-the-phone purchases.
When merchants initiate purchases, it’s important to make sure only your contactless Discover® Card is close to the card reader.
Contactless technology may be available on other cards and devices, which can result in accidental payments if held to the card reader at the same time during checkout.
Yes. Many major city transit systems accept contactless Discover® Cards, such as Chicago Transit Authority, Metropolitan Transportation Authority (NY), and Portland TriMet.
If your transit transaction is declined, contact the merchant directly to resolve the declined transaction.
