Cosign a Loan

Cosign a Student Loan

Help improve your student's chances for private student loan approval and a lower interest rate.

What is a Cosigner?

A cosigner accepts equal responsibility for the repayment of a private student loan. Cosigner need not be related to the student, but many students ask a parent to cosign their applications.

Cosigner must:

  1. Be a US citizen or permanent resident
  2. Be at least 18 years old
  3. Pass a credit check

Why Cosign?

If the student does not have established credit history to qualify for a private student loan on their own, the student may have the option to apply with a creditworthy cosigner.

Even if the student qualifies for a private student loan on their own, the student may receive a lower interest rate by adding a cosigner.

How to apply to be a Cosigner?

Student has already submitted their application - Ask the student for your Cosigner Key to complete a cosigner application or call us at 1-800-STUDENT.

Student has not submitted their application yet - Complete a cosigner nomination to nominate yourself to be a cosigner for the student.

  • We will notify the student after you submit the nomination. The nomination will expire in 60 days if not accepted.
  • You can update or withdraw your nomination until the student selects you as a cosigner.

How this works:

  • We will request some basic information about you.
  • We will check your credit immediately after you provide your consent for credit check.
  • If you pass the credit requirements for the loan, you will need to sign your loan documents.
  • The student will need to come back and accept the final loan terms.
