When Maggie Germano, 30, decided to renovate her home in Riverdale, Maryland, she wasn\u2019t prepared for the process to be so difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was the first time we\u2019d ever been through a renovation, so we didn\u2019t know what to expect,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen you\u2019re going through renovations, your entire home is disrupted. It affects your way of life to have strangers in your home, and renovations can also be incredibly messy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Germano was also surprised when renovations to her kitchen, flooring, and living room took much longer than expected and when the costs went up significantly after the estimate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Germano\u2019s story doesn\u2019t surprise Jason Biddle, founder of a website that provides resources for home renovations to provide better age-related accessibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRenovations are a commitment to the unknown,\u201d he says. \u201cEven those lucky enough to avoid any major curveballs must still deal with plenty of minor issues that pop up during the course of the renovation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biddle believes it\u2019s important to understand how to prepare for a remodel before diving into any work on your home. Here are five things to expect with your remodel, including home remodeling tips to avoid overspending:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Going over budget is common<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ve finally saved up just enough money to pay for what you thought<\/em> those granite countertops and stainless steel appliances would cost. A design change here, an installation issue there, and you may be faced with a tough reality when those savings don\u2019t quite cut it. It\u2019s also easy to fall into a trap of overspending if your initial estimate is too low or no longer covers the scope of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n
