Colonial

Colonial homes are built primarily from wood with a traditionally symmetrical orientation, steep roofs, small glass windows, pillars, rich ornamentation and a massive central chimney. Their popularity began in the 1600s with early European American settlers. They are primarily found in Northeastern states such as Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island.

Improvements:

1. Half-Rounded Windows & Shutters:

a. A common type of window frame used in the colonial times.
b. If your colonial home doesn’t already sport half-rounded windows on the top, this may help add to the classic look.
c. Consider installing half-rounded windows in rooms that don’t have as much natural light as you’d like.

2. Wrought Iron Hardware:

a. Another common feature during the colonial times.
b. If your home doesn’t already have wrought iron hardware installed on doors, cabinets, and drawers, this is a quick and cost-effective project that can easily add to the colonial style home.

3. Replace Carpet with Wood Floors:

a. Typical colonial homes didn’t have carpets, but hardwood flooring.
b. Renovations to colonial style homes often have carpet installed, but it takes away from the colonial look. If your colonial home has carpet, consider re-renovating it to give it hardwood floors and an original colonial look.
