The holiday season can be the catalyst for all sorts of activities, including: giving more to charity, spending quality time with family and friends, participating in religious activities and hosting dinner parties. But one of the most common things people do around the holiday season is shopping.

Buying presents, stocking up on food for a feast, purchasing items for donation or simply splurging on yourself. Whatever the reason, Americans tend to do plenty of shopping during the holiday season, to the tune of almost $692 billion in sales during November and December of last year, a 5.5 percent increase from 2016, according to the National Retail Federation.

With that in mind, Discover’s annual holiday shopping survey further explores Americans’ spending habits during the holidays, and the infographic below highlights some of the more interesting results.
