It’s unfortunate when something is damaged or stolen shortly after you purchased it. In many cases, your loss may not be covered by your renter’s or homeowner’s insurance, or it may fall below the deductible for those policies. But if you made the purchase with your Discover card, then the full cost may be covered by Discover’s Purchase Protection policy.

How Purchase Protection Works

Cardholders can receive up to $500 in reimbursement for purchases made using their Discover card that become damaged or stolen during the first 90 days of ownership. This policy even covers purchases made with cardholders’ Cashback Bonus or Miles, and it is a benefit available to all Discover cardholders at no additional cost.

Covered purchases include most items; however, there are some exceptions including, but not limited to, motorized vehicles, fine art, medical equipment and antiques. In addition, this policy only covers items that are damaged or stolen—not purchases that are misplaced or damaged due to natural disasters.

How to File A Claim

To receive reimbursement for a covered purchase that has been damaged or stolen, you can contact Discover at 1-800-DISCOVER (1-800-347-2683), Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Eastern Time). You will then be required to submit proof of loss within 15 days, which includes:

  • The original purchase receipt and a copy of your Discover card account statement showing the purchase
  • A photograph of the damaged purchase and a copy of the repair bill, or a statement showing the item cannot be repaired
  • A fire or police report, if applicable
  • Other documentation that may be requested by the claims administrator

Once your claim has been accepted, you will receive reimbursement within 60 days.

Tips for Using Purchase Protection

Discover’s Purchase Protection policy allows you to shop with more confidence knowing that your covered items are protected against damage or theft shortly after purchase. To best utilize this policy, familiarize yourself with the terms and conditions, which you can read after you have logged in to your Discover account.

And when you make a purchase, be sure to save the original receipt—it will be necessary if you have to file a Purchase Protection claim, or a claim for other Discover policies, such as Extended Product Warranty, Return Guarantee and Price Protection.
