Volunteer Recognition and Employee Giving
Volunteering is at the heart of Discover's culture. Each year, Discover employees participate in our You Care, We Share Volunteer Recognition Program, which recognizes employees who volunteer for company-sponsored events and those who give their personal time to their own good causes. Employees who log volunteer time can earn a company grant for their organizations. Doing the right thing is also part of our culture. Our You Care, We Share Employee Giving Program provides an easy, online way for employees to make donations to their charities of choice. Discover then provides a match for each donation.
Discover Cares Month
Our Discover Cares Month volunteer initiative takes place in September. Business units throughout the company participate in large-scale projects such as building playgrounds, painting school hallways and classrooms, and filling backpacks with essential school supplies. During the month of September alone, thousands of employees volunteer tens of thousands of hours to help organizations nationwide.
Company-Sponsored Educational Programs
Success in Schools
Discover continues its Success in Schools program by adopting a school in each of the communities where we do business. Each adopted school receives financial support to fund much-needed academic programs and resources. In addition, our employees have the opportunity to participate in volunteer activities such as tutoring, mentoring, and interior and exterior beautification projects at those schools.
We have a long-standing partnership with Junior Achievement, which exemplifies our commitment to support financial education. Junior Achievement programs help prepare young people for the real world by showing them how money is generated, managed and used to create jobs. The programs also encourage entrepreneurial thinking on the part of participants.
For more than 15 years, Discover has been providing funds and volunteer teaching support to K through 8 classrooms nationwide. The relationship includes sponsorship of programs that allow students to spend the day in a virtual city learning how to manage a job and balance a budget. In addition, Discover designed a mock debit card program that is incorporated in these virtual cities to teach the importance of money management.
The partnership also involves a workplace mentoring program at Discover locations that allows employee volunteers to use their expertise to teach local high school students about entrepreneurial efforts. Students learn how to build a business from start to finish: from selling stock, raising capital, and marketing and selling a product.
Each year, hundreds of Discover employee volunteers reach more than 500,000 students and their families through its support of Junior Achievement.
Big Brothers Big Sisters
Discover joined forces with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago in 2011 to develop an at-work mentoring program with children from nearby schools. Employees volunteer twice a month to help with homework, play games and go on field trips.
Based on the success of the program, Big Brother Big Sisters presented Discover with an award for Excellence in Community Service and Partnership for 2011.
Discover has partnered with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation for more than a decade to raise awareness and money to help find a cure for juvenile diabetes. Each year, thousands of employees engage friends and family members to raise money for JDRF by participating in fundraising walks at each of our locations.
