Use your e-mail to correspond with Discover—or anyone else—safely.
Make sure you're on the lookout to be safe when using e-mail by following these simple tips.
Don't Reply to Any E-mail Requesting Personal Information
Legitimate companies will not send you e-mail requesting that you reply with personal or private information, such as:
- Account number
- Cardmember ID (CID)—see card at right
- Card expiration date
- Account Center user ID or password
- Birth date
- Driver's license number
- Mother's maiden name
Don't Send E-mail Containing Confidential Information
Regular e-mail is not a secure method of sending private information. To contact Discover Card regarding your account electronically, log into the Account Center, go to Customer Service and send us a secure message.
Avoid Unknown E-mails
If you don't know the sender, delete it. Some e-mail may contain viruses whose sole purpose is to wreak havoc on your hard drive. Other e-mails are fishing for live addresses. Don't ask to "unsubscribe." This only confirms they've reached an active e-mail account and will usually increase the amount of unsolicited e-mails you receive.
Be Alert for E-mail Scams
Offers of free money or requests for a user ID, account number or password are usually fake. When an e-mail sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Don't respond to it. Just delete it.
Be Cautious Before Clicking on a Link Contained in E-mail
Some scam e-mails will direct you to a phony, look-alike site that will ask you for confidential information. Don't be fooled. Verify that the Web site is legitimate and, if necessary, check with the company first before entering any private information into a Web site received from an e-mail link.
And even if you don't provide your account Information at a phony Web site, clicking the link or red "X" in the corner, can unleash viruses that capture your identification, password and account information. Close any pop-ups or new Web pages by right clicking on the box at the bottom of your screen with the title of the pop-up or Web page.
Identify Authentic Discover Card E-mails
Verify the Authenticity of E-mail from Discover Card
Discover Card will never send you any e-mail that directly requests your account or personal information. You can verify the authenticity of an e-mail by checking the address that it is sent from. E-mails from Discover Card will come from one of these addresses:
- discover@email.discover.com
- service@email.discover.com
- websupport@service.discovercard.com
- discoverbusinesscard@email.discovercard.com
Report Suspected Fraudulent E-mails to Discover Card
If you receive an e-mail that claims to be from Discover Card that you suspect might be fraudulent, call 1-800-DISCOVER (1-800-347-2683) immediately. A Customer Service Representative can verify whether or not the e-mail was actually sent by Discover Card.
